Essendon Plumbing Services received an after-hours emergency plumbing call from a resident at the Mernda Retirement Village. The lady reported she could hear a loud hissing noise in the wall that sounded like water spraying, she investigated further around the area were the noise was emanating from and found water pooling on her garage floor.
As the client had already isolated the water to her Villa, she requested a plumber for the following day. Our Admin team arranged for an emergency plumber to attend at a time that suited her, which was 7.30am the following morning.
Arrival on Site & Investigation
Richard, our expert plumber attended site at the scheduled time the following morning. Here he discussed where the noise was coming from with the resident, and she showed him where the water was pooling on the garage floor.
Richard then commenced trouble shooting, he turned the water back on at the meter to see if he could identify signs of water leak.
Nothing presented immediately so he continued his investigation by accessing the ceiling space via the manhole in the garage. He located both the hot and cold water pipes running down the wall in the area the water was pooling the night before, but there were no signs of water in the ceiling, all the insulation was dry, and no water stains were visible.
Richard then came down from the ceiling and could now hear water spraying in the wall behind the garage. He quickly identified that it was the hot water pipe leaking not the cold, so he turned the cold water supply off to the hot water service, which gave the client access to cold water again.
Identifying the Cause
Richard then set about measuring where the hot water pipe was in the wall, so he could keep the wall repair works to a minimum. The plaster wall felt damp where he could hear the water leaking, he could also hear a strong hissing noise in the area. He then marked out a section of plaster to be cut out and explained to the owner what he needed to do to access the leaking pipe. The owner agreed so Richard proceeded to cut a section of plaster out of the wall.
Once the plaster was cut and removed, both the hot and cold water pipes were accessible, and Richard quickly identified the leak in the hot water pipe just above the concrete slab. On further inspection he noticed a nail had pierced the hot water pipe, when the Villa was built the carpenters must have nicked the water pipe with a nail when fitting the skirting board, up until that evening it had managed to remain sealed but eventually the pipe failed, and water started leaking in the wall.
Repairing the Hot Water Pipe & Testing
Richard could now repair the burst pipe; he removed a section of damaged pipe and inserted a new piece before turning the hot water back on again and testing for any leaks.
The repair past the test and the client was very happy knowing her home wasn’t being damaged and she could have a hot shower once again. Richard cleaned up the site and removed all the rubbish.
The client was advised to leave the wall open for a period to allow it to dry out properly before having the repairs done and the walls painted.
