Recently we carried out a major bathroom plumbing renovation in Strathmore Heights. The owner was after a local plumber and spoke to one of our plumbing estimators who advised them that their brief was achievable, and we could provide a fixed price quote via email within 24hrs.
The ‘Rough In’ Stage (the term used for the first stage of a bathroom renovation)
This is where we install all the pipework into the walls, floors and ceiling before any coverings are fitted.
The job involved excavating the existing below ground drainage on the outside of the house to suit the new bathroom layout, this included a shower, toilet and wall hung vanity basin. As with all below ground drainage work and any job over $750.00, a Plumbing Certificate of Compliance was lodged with the Victorian Building Authority and a below ground drainage inspection was booked prior to backfilling the excavation.
Once we received certification, the Internal drainage could be installed and connected to the new external drainage, this meant hot and cold water pipes could go into the walls to suit the new plumbing fixtures. The client also wanted a tiled stepless shower base, so the existing concrete slab needed to be chased out and removed, and a new waste and cement screed needed to be installed prior to waterproofing the bathroom.
Finally, a water pressure test was carried out on all new pipework to make sure it was sound and there were no leaks before any plaster was installed on the walls.
The Planning Stage
To successfully complete a major bathroom renovation, it takes planning and accuracy. Our plumber needs to be skilled and aware of the specific fixtures, fittings and tapware being installed as these items won’t be installed until completion of all other works. It is therefore critical to only engage an experienced licensed plumber for your bathroom plumbing needs because pipes and fittings in the wrong place can cost a lot to repair.
Be careful of a cheap quote, as it may not always be best. Make sure you understand what the quote allows and if you’re not sure, then ask questions.
