Burst water pipes will damage a home fast, so the quicker you call an expert plumber when you notice you have a water leak, the less damage will be done to your home. Leaving or ignoring water leaks will cause mould to grow around your home, rot timber framework, undermine footings and foundations and cost you money on your next water bill.
Ben, our emergency plumber, received a job from our admin team to attend a home in East Keilor where the owner suspected they had a leak under the kitchen sink flooring as they could hear a hissing sound in the area.
Arrival On Site & Investigation
Ben arrived on site, introduced himself to the owner and asked our COVID safe questions before inspecting the kitchen for a leak. He then began investigating the possible causes of the burst water pipe. He decided he needed to access under the kitchen flooring, so he crawled under the house to get to the location of the burst pipe.
What he found was a split copper pipe that was supplying cold water to the kitchen sink. He took a video (below) of what he found under the house so he could show the owner, making it easier to explain how he was going to repair the fault.
Repairing the Water Pipe
Access to the area was minimal from under the house, so Ben explained to the owner he needed to cut a hole under the kitchen sink cupboard to physically disconnect the split pipe. The owner understood the situations and gave the OK for Ben to proceed.
Ben then cut a hole in the floor and cut out the section of leaking copper pipe. A new piece of pipe was fabricated and installed to supply the kitchen sink mixer tap with cold water. He then needed to go back under the house to re-connect the new pipe to the existing cold water copper supply. Once this was connected, the water was turned back on and the repair was tested for leaks, which passed.
Ben then packed up, cleaned the site and made sure the owner was happy with the job before leaving for his next job.
