Case Study – Hot Water in Flemington

Essendon Plumbing Services received a call from a customer in Flemington with no hot water, the customer believed the hot water service tank had burst due to the amount of water on the ground and the age of the hot water system.

Operations manager Richard spoke with the customer over the phone and explained to them if they could take a couple of specific photos he could supply them with a fixed price quote and various options over the phone for a new hot water system.

The customer was happy with the quote and the quick turnaround time to install the new unit on the same day. Richard then scheduled Sean our expert gas plumber to remove the old and install the new hot water system.

How did our Expert Gas Plumber do the job?

Sean arrived on site at the appointed time and first carried out an inspection of the existing unit to confirm that it had burst and wasn’t just a failed component. After a quick inspection he determined the unit was irreparable and needed to be replaced which he explained to the owners so they could feel confident all avenues had been explored before replacing the unit.

What Sean did find when inspecting the old hot water system was the original installation was non-compliant due to the gas flu being too close to an opening window - providing an opportunity for flue gases to enter the home. Sean explained to the owners he needs to move the location of the unit approximately 400mm to one side, which they understood and were happy for the installation to continue.

Sean began by draining down the old hot water service and disconnecting all pipework. Once empty he then removed the unit. As the new hot water system was being installed in a slightly different location to the old he had to modify the gas, hot and cold water supply pipes to suit the new installation.

New unit secured and in position

The new hot water unit was installed and secured in position. The complete gas fitting line to the home was then pressure tested to 1.5 times the operating pressure and once passed connected to the hot water unit and checked with soapy water.

The hot and cold-water pipes were connected and tempering valve installed before filling of the new unit commenced. Sean opened up a hot tap in the house to bleed the air out of the pipework and once it was full the appliance could be commissioned.

Sean then explained the operating procedure with the owners and made sure they were happy with the installation before cleaning up the site and packing up all his tools. Sean was given confirmation by the owners they were indeed happy with his workmanship before he left to drop the old hot water system off at a metal recycler and onto his next job.
