Essendon Plumbing Services received a call from a customer in Airport West with warm water coming out of the hot tap. The customer thought the hot water cylinder may have a hole in it as water was leaking onto the ground around the hot water system, they guessed the hot water system was about 14 years old.
Phone Inspection & Diagnosis:
Our operations manager, Richard, spoke with the customer over the phone and asked if they could take a photo of the hot water system and send it to him so he could try diagnosing the fault over the phone and provide them with a quote to either repair or replace the hot water service.
The customer forwarded some photos, and it was obvious to Richard that the cylinder had failed, and the hot water system needed to be replaced. Richard then supplied the owners a fixed price quote with three different options to replace their existing hot water system over the phone.
After Richard explained the detail in each option, the customer decided on option two, to replace the existing unit with a Rheem Stellar 360L external gas hot water system - see image. This contains a manufacturer 10 year warranty on the cylinder, 5 star energy rating and Essendon Plumbing Services’ lifetime guarantee on all workmanship.
Knowing how important it is to have hot water flowing in your home Richard made sure we could install the new hot water service on the same day, which the customer was over the moon about. Richard scheduled Amanda, one of our expert gas hot water system plumbers, to complete the job.
Arrival On Site
Amanda arrived on time in the afternoon and first carried out an inspection of the existing unit to make sure Richard’s diagnoses was correct as he had diagnosed the fault over the phone, it did not take long for her to determine that the cylinder had indeed burst, and the unit was irreparable.
Amanda then took the time to explain to the customer that she had carried out a site inspection and that the hot water system had indeed past its use by date. The owner could then feel confident all avenues had been explored before replacing their existing hot water tank.
Amanda also explained to the owner that the existing water isolation tap, and gas isolation valve needed to be replaced for compliance on the new installation.
Amanda had collected the new Rheem Stellar Hot water system on her way to the job and always carries spare water and gas isolation valves in her van. This meant she had all the materials ready to go to make installing the new hot water system fast.
Removing the Old Hot Water System
- Amanda drained the old hot water service and disconnected all pipework.
- Once empty, she then removed the unit.
- Amanda then carried out a gas pressure test on the gas fitting line to the home to make sure there were no leaks before installing the new gas isolation valve.
- She then turned off the mains water supply at the water meter and changed over the water valve to the new hot water system before turning the mains back on again.
Installing the New Hot Water System
- The new hot water system was then installed and secured in position.
- The hot water, cold water and gas lines were then connected
- Then the gas was turned back on again and tested with soapy water between the isolation valve and hot water service.
- The water was then turned back on to the new hot water service to fill the tank with water prior to igniting the main burner.
Air needs to be released from the cylinder and the water pipework while filling the hot water system, so Amanda had the kitchen tap open until the tank was full and all air had been released. It was now time to commission the hot water service and ignite the burner.
Commissioning the Hot Water Service
Amanda ran through the operating procedure with the owner and made sure they were happy with the installation before cleaning up the site.
Amanda explained they would receive a copy of their Certificate of Compliance within the next 48hrs and if they had any questions to feel free to contact our office at any time.
Another Happy Customer
The customer was happy with the job and commented on the timely way it was done, and the friendly advice and service they received over the phone when talking to Richard.
