Water dripping from the ceiling is never a good thing and if you live in a single-story house and it’s raining outside, it’s a sure sign you have a leaking roof.
A regular customer, Dave, recently called our office and spoke to Debbie from our admin team regarding water leaking through the ceiling in his kitchen.
Deb quickly realised that this sounded like an emergency plumbing job that needed to be responded to within the hour. Deb forwarded the phone call directly to Matt, our Operations manager, who spoke to Dave and scheduled to call past in 15 minutes as he was in the area at the time. Dave was most grateful.
Arrival on Site
Matt arrived and the rain was pouring down, a quick inspection and it was obvious to Matt there was a substantial leak coming in from above. Matt mapped out where the leak may be on the roof by using an old brick chimney as his reference. The chimney backed onto both the kitchen and lounge room, so when he got up onto the roof he could locate where he was in relation to the kitchen below.
Identifying the Leak
Matt installed a ‘roof harness fixing point’ to the metal corrugated roof on the opposite side of the ridge, so he could safely access the roof in a harness. He secured his ladder in position and attached his harness before accessing the roof area to locate the roof leak.
There was a substantial amount of water leaking onto the kitchen floor, so Matt suspected the leak may not be too hard to find. It wasn’t long before he located an old roof penetration where the seal had deteriorated, and the roof sheet had rusted through letting water leak into the roof space below.
Matt explained to Dave he found where the water was coming in from and that he would carry out a temporary repair to stop the water coming in and damaging his home, but a longer-term solution needed to be carried out to prevent it re-occurring in the future. The rusted roof sheet needed to be replaced and a new penetration collar installed.
Temporarily Repairing the Leak
Matt first completed the temporary repair then provided Dave with a quote to carry out the permanent repair work. Dave accepted the quote on the spot!
The material was in stock at our plumbing supplier and the weather was clear for the following day, so Matt scheduled the work to be carried out the following morning at 8am by Thom, another expert roof plumber at Essendon Plumbing Services.
In preparation for the job for Thom, Matt:
- Explained to Thom what was involved in the job that afternoon
- Showed him photos, so he was prepared when he attended the site
- Pre-ordered the material to be delivered to Dave’s home so when Thom arrived it would be all ready to go.
Permanently Repairing the Leak
Thom arrived the following morning to blue skies and his material sitting there ready to go. Within 2 hours Thom had removed the old roof, installed the new roof and was cleaned up and ready to move onto his next job.
Another Happy Customer
Dave was happy knowing his home was watertight with heavy rain predicted over the weekend. We had another happy repeat customer at Essendon Plumbing Services.
Matt showed that, once again, Essendon Plumbing Services will go above and beyond for our customers. Matt happened to be in the area when Dave called for help and knew the quickest response on this occasion would be for him to call past Dave’s home and attend to the emergency roof leak himself, rather than schedule it for someone else.
Need to Prevent a Roof leak in Melbourne?
Preventative Roof Maintenance - We understand it never seems a priority to have your roof, gutters and downpipes checked but a small investment now will save you money in the long term. Leaking roofs and gutters can cause extensive damage to ceilings, walls, floors, and furniture in a very short period.
The build-up of leaves, dirt, grass, birds’ nests, and tennis balls all cause roof leaks, so be sure to have your roof check done before the winter rain hits Melbourne.
We recommend having your gutters and downpipes cleaned 4 times a year but before winter is the most important.
