Our admin team at Essendon Plumbing Services recently received a call from David in Essendon with a suspected burst hot water system. David had no hot water in the home and there was a pool of water around the base of the hot water service.
Given the information received our Admin team provided David with various hot water system replacement options and the costs associated with each.
David chose to replace his existing Hardie- Dux mains pressure gas storage how water system with a like for like unit, a new Vulcan hot water system.
The time that best suited David for the installation of his new hot water system was after 12 pm the following day so our hot water plumbing expert Lee was assigned the job.

Lee arrived on site at 12.30 pm with all material on board ready to replace David’s Hot Water System in Melbourne. His first job was to drain down the existing hot water tank and remove it from service. To do this Lee isolated the gas and cold-water supply to the unit. He then installed a drain hose before disconnecting the hot water outlet allowing air to enter the tank and the unit to drain drown. Once drained down he disconnected all services and removed the hot water tank.
Lee noted the existing cold water isolation valve (Duo Valve) and gas isolation valve (gas cock) were non-compliant and needed to also be replaced. He fabricated all new pipework to suit the replacement valves and the installation of the new Vulcan hot water system. The new Vulcan hot water service was then installed in position and secured.
The gas fitting line was pressure tested before being connected, followed by cold and hot water supplies. Before filling the hot water tank, a tap was opened in the house to allow all air to be bled out of the hot water pipework then the cold water supply was turned on, once a steady flow of water without air was coming out of the tap it was turned off and it was time to commission the new hot water system.
A soapy water test was carried out on the short piece of gas pipework between the gas cock and Unitrol before installing a manometer on the gas control valve and igniting the burner. Lee checked the burner pressure on the manometer which was set correctly before removing it and tightening the connection point then soapy water testing the joint. A visual inspection was then carried out on all joints before loading up the old hot water service to be taken to the recycling yard when he finished while he waited for the hot water system to come up to temperature.
Lee’s job as an expert Master plumber in Melbourne was completed once he explained the operating procedure on the new Vulcan hot water unit and made sure David was happy with the outcome. Once Lee had David’s tick of approval his last stop for the day was dropping off the old unit at the metal recycling yard before heading home.
The job wasn’t completed though until our Administration team had issued David with a Certificate of Compliance, which must be issued within 5 working days of completing the installation.
