Essendon Plumbing Services recently received an enquiry on whether we could install fire service pipe work and a valve assembly that combines various water tanks on a rural property in Mickleham. This was to be used as a firefighting water supply.
Deb, our admin assistant, took the call and the customers details then forwarded the call to Matt as the job was a specialised plumbing enquiry.
The Brief
Matt, our experienced plumbing estimator, spoke with Victor who explained he was having trouble finding a local plumbing company who could assist him with the work he needed. Victor explained he lived on a rural property and all his water is supplied to the property via multiple water tanks:
- 3 x 22,000Lt water tanks – smaller tanks
- 1 x 70,000Lt water tank – larger tank
Victor needed a specialised plumbing service that could install 3 x 80mm copper water pipes and isolation valve pipes to connect the 3 smaller tanks to top up the larger tank.
Victor also required the tanks to be configured in a specific way as the water tanks form part of the firefighting sprinkler system that would protect the main house on the property. Victor had had the system designed and engineered to protect his family and property should they be confronted with a bushfire come summer.
Matt assured Victor he could assist with his enquiry and organised a time to attend site to run through the scope of work to then provide a free fixed price quotation.
Arrival On Site
Matt arrived on the appointed time and Victor ran through what he required and how the system was designed to work. When the large tank drained to a set level, an actuator valve assembly would automatically open the 3 newly installed valves, which would then allow water from the three smaller tanks via the new pipework installed to top up the main tank.
The line was engineered to be manufactured from class B copper pipe. Victor supplied Matt with a site drawing of what was required then Matt proceeded to accurately site measure, allowing him to quote this specialised plumbing enquiry.
Providing a Free Fixed Price Quote
Matt provided Victor with a detailed fixed price quote to complete the proposed works.
Victor accepted the quote and was understanding of the details within it, so a time was organised for a specialised plumber to attend and carry out the work detailed in the quote.
Completing the Specialised Plumbing Work
Matt scheduled Sean and Matthew, two of our experienced specialised plumbers, to carry out the work at Victor’s property.
- The new 80mm copper water pipe configuration and valve assembly were fabricated on site and in position from each of the three smaller tanks to the larger tank.
- All joints were silver soldered in position to allow flexibility with the installation.
- The new actuator driven valves were installed in the locations marked on the engineering drawings to ensure compliance.
Testing & Site Clean Up
Once the water tank installation was complete, the new lines were tested to make sure there were no leaks. Victor was taken through the completed works to ensure he was happy with the installation and the site was then cleaned and all rubbish was removed.
Victor was now ready and able to organise his following trades to come in and complete the fire system set up.
