What Could be Wrong with Your Hot Water System?
There are many parts to a hot water system, and a lot of it depends on whether your hot water service is gas, electric, heat pump or solar. This will assist us in determining the cause of the fault. It could be as simple as the pilot light going out or a failed pressure relief valve, or something more serious like a leaking tank or split heat exchanger.
Hot water systems are complicated appliances with many parts and require a great deal of skill and knowledge to diagnose and repair. Don’t risk playing around with these systems yourself as they involve dangerous elements like natural gas, electricity, and hot water which in the wrong hands can be fatal.
For peace of mind and the safety of loved ones, only engage a licensed hot water plumber to work on your hot water system.
Turning Off the Water Supply
Most of us have experienced a plumbing emergency in our Melbourne home; blocked toilet, leaking roof, blocked drain and burst hot water pipes. These are all examples of plumbing emergencies. Some you can attempt a DIY repair on, others will need a professional licensed Master Plumber.
A burst hot water system is one you need an experienced licensed plumber for. However, there is one key thing you can do before your plumber arrives to eliminate anyone getting burnt. That is to Turn off the Water Supply.
Whether it be a leaking hot tap, a burst hot water system or a leaking hot water pipe, the first thing to do is to turn the water supply off. The easiest way to do this is to turn the main cold water isolation valve off to the property, which will turn the water off to all taps in the home.

Hot Water systems are supplied with cold water, so when you isolate the cold water supplying them it stops the hot water flow out to the hot taps.
The problem you have doing this is it will shut off the hot and cold water to our home. Once the main supply has been turned off and the hot water has stopped running, you can then isolate the cold-water valve at the hot water system and turn the main supply back on, then check the leak to make sure it’s stopped running. You now have the cold water back on to your home until your same day hot water service plumber arrives.
Do Your Need to Turn Off the Gas or Electricity to Your Hot Water System?
No, there is no need to turn the gas or electricity supply off.
Gas Hot Water Systems have a flame failure device which isolates the gas automatically via the gas control valve when a fault is detected. However, if you are concerned, you can turn the gas supply off to the property at the gas meter but remember you will need to re-light any gas appliances that have a pilot light once the gas is turned on again.
If you have an Electric Hot Water System, then you can isolate the power to the hot water system at your switchboard. DO NOT attempt to remove the access panel on the hot water system though. Some hot water systems will have a GPO located near the hot water system, which can be turned off or just unplug it.
