Gas Storage Hot Water Systems
We all love turning on the tap and having instant access to hot water. Modern gas hot water service systems are far more energy efficient than their predecessors with the introduction of 3, 4 and 5 star models making them a cost effective option for your hot water delivery. Gas storage hot water systems and electric storage hot water systems store large quantities of hot water in an insulated tank ready to use when you turn on the tap.
Gas fired hot water systems use a gas fired burner to heat up the water in the cylinder to the desired set temperature. The burner is located at the base of the unit external to the cylinder and controlled by the Uni- Control valve located in front of the service hatch.
Reasons to choose a gas hot water service
- Energy efficient models available
- Safe to operate
- Cost effective to install
- Mains pressure at your faucets
- Indoor and outdoor models available
- Fewer greenhouse gas emissions than electric options
- Limitations of gas storage hot water systems
- Limited supply of hot water when operated for extended periods
- Units are large and bulky in size
- Storage tanks are subject to radiant heat loss
- Limited life span of approx. 5-15 years depending on model

Electric storage hot water systems
Electric storage hot water systems work similarly to natural gas storage systems. Cold water is piped into the tank where it is heated, then it rises to the top and is siphoned off when the hot tap is turned on. The difference is in where the heating occurs. In an electric model, one or two elements are located inside the water, warming it from the inside.
A thermostat is used to control and maintain the temperature to which the water is heated. Should the water pressure or temperature rise too high, water will be pushed out through the pressure relief valve, and escape through the overflow pipe.
Off-peak or economy tariff connections offer even more cost reductions for homes limited to electric storage hot water system options.
Reasons to choose electric storage hot water systems
- Cost effective to install
- Safe to operate
- Efficient use of energy
- Flexible installation - indoor or outdoor options
- Mains pressure at your faucets
- Compact models perfect for limited hot water applications such as small apartments or office kitchens.
Limitations of electric storage hot water systems
- High operating costs if on a continuous (anytime) tariff
- Units are large and bulky in size
- Limited supply of hot water when operated for extended periods
- Slow heating time recovery
- Greater greenhouse gas emissions than gas
Continuous Flow Hot Water Systems
These systems work to heat the water as you need it rather than heating up a tank and storing it. When a hot tap in your home is turned, on your continuous flow gas hot water heater heats up the water as it passes over the burner delivering an endless supply of hot water. It is one of the most energy efficient hot water systems on the market. As no water is stored, there is no heat loss from a tank or any need to keep a body of water at a consistent temperature. These units only operate when the hot tap is turned on, and provide continuous hot water for as long as the tap is open.
Reasons to choose instant hot water systems
- Never run out of hot water
- Small in size can be mounted on a wall
- Only heats the water as it's needed reducing running costs
- Energy efficient
- Temperature can be pre-set at the unit
- Typically a longer life span than storage units
Limitations of instant hot water systems
- Can be more expensive to install than a standard storage system.
- Multiple units may be needed to supply a large house
- The unit ideally needs to be installed close to the hot water outlet
- Hot water flow rates are limited by size of the unit.
- It can often take a few seconds for the hot water to reach the outlet
Heat Pump Hot Water Systems
A heat pump system works like a refrigerator in reverse - by transferring the heat outside the unit to the water inside the heater. It does this using a heat exchange system. Outside air is pulled into the heat pump with a fan into the evaporator which contains a special refrigerant stored in the piping. The warm air turns the refrigerant from liquid to gas. A compressor pumps the refrigerant gas through a valve which compresses it. The result of this process is heat generation. A heat exchanger then moves the heat from the gas pipes to a water storage tank.
Reasons to choose heat pump water heaters
- Saves money in the long term
- Energy-efficient
- Environmentally friendly
- Fewer greenhouse gas emissions than a conventional water heating system
- Effective in lower temperatures
- No need for solar panels, inverters, and batteries
- Easy to install and connect to your hot water plumbing
Limitations of heat pump water heaters
- Not suitable in extremely cold climates
- Can purchase a booster in cold climates, but it is costly
- May be unreliable if installed or used incorrectly
- High initial purchase and installation cost
Solar Hot Water Systems Melbourne
Solar Hot Water Systems work by harnessing free power from the sun providing a very low operating cost. Mains pressure cold water passes through the solar panel or evacuated tubes located generally on your roof. The panel or tubes are designed to absorb the sun’s heat and transfer it to the water as efficiently as possible. The sun then heats up the water and depending on the strength of the sun will determine the amount of heat transferred to the water. The hot water then moves to a storage tank where it is stored for use. As the hot water comes in from the solar panel at the top of the tank it pushes the colder water in the tank to the bottom where it will then be circulated back through the solar panel to get hotter. This cycle repeats itself until the water in the tank reaches the system’s design set temperature. If the sun isn’t strong enough to heat the water in the tank to the desired temperature (usually 55 to 60 degrees Celsius) then an electric or gas booster will add the extra heat required. Solar hot water systems and Installation costs are often subsidised by government rebates and incentives and you may be eligible for these.
Reasons to choose solar hot water systems
- Use free energy from the sun to Reduce your homes energy costs
- Great for climates that receive a lot of sunshine
- Possibly eligible for government STC rebates - reducing purchasing costs
- Lower monthly electricity costs
- Close coupled models can be located out of the way on the roof
- Both gas or electric boosted models available.
- Gas boosted models for extra energy efficiency
Limitations of solar hot water systems
- Higher up front cost for equipment & installation
- Tank takes up more space than tankless units
- Not ideal for homes with shaded rooves
- Reduced effectiveness if trees grow or tall buildings shade your home in the future
- Not suitable for homes with minimal or no roof space
- Outdoor installation only
- More equipment = more maintenance
