Did you know we can help you achieve and maintain compliance at your workplace for plumbing and drainage OH&S requirements?
Essendon Plumbing Services recently received an online enquiry from a commercial client in Tullamarine, they noted on the form they had received an audit from WorkSafe as they had failed compliance on their emergency eyewash station. WorkSafe provided an audit report, which noted the eye wash station was not fit for purpose.

Response Within the Hour
Richard, our Operations manager, responded to the enquiry within the hour, he assured them that Essendon Plumbing Services could help them with their plumbing problem in Tullamarine.
Richard organised a site meeting between Lee, one of our experienced commercial plumbers, and the site contact for a time that suited them and their operations.
Arrival On Site & Investigation
Lee arrived at the appointed time and signed in at reception before being shown the safety eye wash station of concern. Lee carried out a complete audit as per: AS4775-2007, which is the safety equipment minimum performance checklist. From this he quickly discovered the following issues needed to be resolved to achieve compliance.
The eye wash station had no emergency shower attached, and the water supply was inadequate due to the pipework being undersized. The emergency shower must deliver a minimum continuous water flow of 75.7 litres per minute, which the existing water supply was unable to provide.
Lee explained to the client what needed to be done to achieve compliance, they were happy to proceed with the work as soon as possible. So, Lee started planning the installation of a new emergency shower and eyewash station with the correctly sized water supply.
Disconnecting & Removing Eye Wash Station
He first needed to order a new emergency eye wash and shower station. He then set about disconnecting and removing the original eye wash ready for the installation of the new one the following day.
New Eye Wash Station Installation
Lee arrived at 7.30am the following morning and commenced by installing the new 25mm potable cold-water supply. A new 25mm copper water pipe was installed and ran to position.
The shower and eye wash arrived at 9.15am and was quickly assembled and placed into position, ensuring that all clearances were complied with, such as:
- No obstructions within a 406mm radius of the centre point of the shower
- The shower was installed within the permitted set out guidelines of 2085mm – 2438mm
Testing & Cleaning Up
The water was then connected to the shower and eye wash station before turning the water on and testing for leaks.
Lee then cleaned up the work area so commissioning and testing of the shower and eye wash station could be undertaken.
A flow rate test was carried out using testing equipment consisting of a test bin with a volume gauge that calculates the amount of water entering the catchment bin to ensure adequate flow was achieved.
Once the test was completed, Lee had recorded a flow rate of 85 litres per minute, which exceeded the minimum requirement of 75.7 litres per minute needed to comply with AS4775-2007.
Another Happy Customer
Our customer was over the moon with the fact there plumbing compliance issues had been resolved in a timely manner - within 48hrs of the initial enquiry and with no disruptions to their business.
They could now notify WorkSafe that they were fully compliant by emailing them a copy of the certificate of compliance and scheduling a follow up inspection.
The customer told Richard how their minds were put at ease from their initial enquiry. They were impressed with our service: Richard responded within the hour, Lee arrived the same day at the appointed time to carry out a site inspection and the job was completed the following day with no disruption to their normal business operations.
