Can I Install my Own Dishwasher?

The answer isn’t as straight forward as you may think. Before anything, here are some questions to ask yourself:

1. Are you replacing a broken dishwasher with a new one?
2. Has the dishwasher been installed as per the manufacturer’s instructions?
3. Is the dishwasher installation a new installation?
4. Is there water and power supply for the dishwasher?

Dishwashers require both water and power to operate correctly, but if the two are combined in an incorrect installation, the outcome can be catastrophic. There are dishwasher installation regulations and standards that help reduce the risk of damage occurring and they need to be adhered to.

The Manufacturer’s Warranty

If there is NO water supply isolation tap located under your kitchen sink, then you’ll need to engage an expert Licensed Melbourne plumber. Your Licensed plumber will install a tee into the existing water supply and a tap dedicated for your new dishwasher.

Manufacturer’s instructions will note whether the new dishwasher requires hot or cold water and whether a pressure limiting valve is needed for the appliance as part of the installation. Your licensed plumber will also connect the drainage hose from your dishwasher to the wastewater pipe under the sink and supply you with a certificate of compliance on completion. This gives you peace of mind that your new dishwasher is fully covered under the terms and conditions of the Manufacturer’s Warranty.

However, it may not always be necessary to call a Plumber, you may be able to save yourself a little money by doing a DIY dishwasher installation. However, engaging a Licensed Plumber will ensure your manufacturer’s warranty is not jeopardised, giving you peace of mind should anything go wrong.

Electrical Work for Power Supply

There are also regulations and standards on the supply of power to a dishwasher. For the safety of you and your family, we recommend engaging a Licensed Electrician to do this work for you.

Dishwasher GPOs - power points, water supply taps and the drainage connection must be made and located in the cupboard beside the dishwasher NOT in the same cupboard space as the dishwasher. This means a hole needs to be cut in the cupboard joinery wall to allow the dishwasher water pipe, drainage pipe and power cord to be pushed through.

Sealing Your Bench Tops

When you open the door of your dishwasher after a cycle is complete it can release steam, which will cause condensation to form on the underside of your bench top. For this reason, you should have the underside of your bench top sealed with an appropriate sealer to assist in reducing the possibility of moisture damage.

Note: The seal needs to cover 150 millimetres on either side of the dishwasher installation.

So, Can I Install my Dishwasher?

If you’re changing over a broken dishwasher with a new dishwasher then theoretically, YES you can install it yourself. However, be mindful not to void the manufacturer’s warranty by being sure the installation meets the regulations and standards of the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

For this reason, we recommend only engaging a Licensed Plumber and a Licensed Electrician to install your dishwasher.
