Recently we received an online booking from a residential home in Moonee Ponds Melbourne where the owner suspected he had a water leak in the ceiling. He suggested there was a visible stain on the ceiling which had become larger and was starting to drip onto the floor below.
Our local plumber in Moonee Ponds attended the job and noted the stain on the plaster ceiling, he then proceeded to problem solve through the possibilities to locate the source. He noted that, as there was a second story to the home, it was less likely to be a roof leak and more likely to be a water leak between floor levels. After carrying out a visual inspection of the home’s layout, it was noted that there was a bathroom on the second storey directly above the area of the stain.
Our local plumber independently ran each fixture in the bathroom to see if any of them caused water to leak below. When he got to the shower, he noted water starting to drip from the ceiling below, so he suspected the shower was the issue. As the water wasn’t leaking when the shower was turned off, he thought it may be a leak from the shower drainpipe.
The only last possibility before confirming that it was the drainpipe, was to test the section of pipework between the tap set and the shower head. To cross this off his checklist he needed to cap off the shower outlet and turn on both the hot and cold taps in the shower. He did this and no leaks were found. So, he re-installed the shower head and the shower was turned back on again, once again the leak appeared, this now meant he was confident it was the drain on the shower that was leaking. Access was then needed to inspect the pipework to be 100% sure before repairing the leak.
Through this inspection, it was found that the trap washers on the shower base had deteriorated and were leaking. Our plumber removed the damaged trap, installed new pipework to the shower base and water tested it again.
This resulted in NO LEAK, meaning another happy client and another problem solved.
