Steve called us from Oak Park and spoke to Matt in our office regarding his hot water system that had stopped working. Matt organised a time that afternoon that suited Steve for us to inspect the unit.
Inspection
When Matt arrived, Steve had already turned the cold water supply off to the unit and told Matt the water had been leaking from the bottom of the heater. Matt turned the water briefly back on and as Matt suspected, the unit had past its use by date and the storage cylinder had burst.
Matt provided Steve with the below various options and the costs associated with each:
- Replacing the existing Rheem internal storage heater with the same type
- Relocating the new hot water system to outside
- Changing to a continuous flow system
- Installing a solar hot water system
Steve decided to replace the internal Rheem gas storage hot water heater and asked for the job to be carried out by Essendon Plumbing Services the next morning.
Install Day
Pick Up the Items
Our plumbers Lee and Caleb were assigned the job through our operating system, scheduled to arrive at 7.30am. Matt had organised the new hot water heater and the other materials required to change the heater over and noted on the job system for Lee or Caleb to pick the items up from our supplier on their way to the job.
Caleb went straight to the job to start removing the existing hot water service by draining the tank first. While the tank was draining, he disconnected the gas, cold and hot water to the unit and removed the flue. The gas cock and water isolation valve were non-compliant, so he replaced them ready for the new hot water heater to be installed.
Installation
Meanwhile Lee arrived with the new not water heater and materials to set it up outside, which made for a quick install. Once the tank was drained Lee and Caleb removed the old system and placed it in the trailer to be taken away and recycled.
Checks and Tests
The new hot water system was then installed into position with the gas, cold water, hot water and flue connected. The complete gas line from the meter was pressure tested and the hot and cold water pipes were checked for leaks. The flue was also checked to make sure it was drawing correctly.
Once all the checks had been made and passed, the new unit was commissioned. This incorporated making sure the storage tank temperature exceeded 60 degrees Celsius, preventing the possibility of Legionella bacteria growing. The tempering valve setting was also checked, to make sure the hot water at the bathroom outlets did not exceed 50 degrees Celsius.
