We receive enquiries daily from customers requesting answers to a multitude of Plumbing questions. However, the 5 most asked questions we receive are answered in this plumbing blog.
1. Do You Charge a Call Out Fee?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is YES.
Every plumbing company is different and charges in different ways, but we think the most honest, open, and transparent way to charge for our plumbing services is to charge a service call or call out fee. We make sure we display our call out fee on our pricing options page. A service fee is a charge to cover the cost of a plumber traveling to your home or business.
Some plumbing companies in Melbourne charge a quoting fee and some charge by the job but they will all incorporate a cost for the time taken to attend your home or business.
2. Can you Provide a Quote Over the Phone?
We have a pricing options page which clearly displays our charges for plumbing services. There are some plumbing services where we can provide a fixed price quote over the phone, and then there are some we can only provide an estimated cost, making assumptions on existing conditions.
However, if you require a fixed price quote for larger type plumbing work, then a site visit is recommended prior to work commencing, that way there are no unwanted surprises at the end of the job.
3. Can I Clear My Drain with Chemical Drain Cleaners?
Clogged Drains can be caused by a variety of issues ranging from hair balls and excess toilet paper through to tree roots and broken drains. There generally isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ repair to unclog drains.
Chemical drain cleaners are potentially dangerous and extremely toxic, and they damage plumbing pipes meaning you may end up needing to replace your drainpipes sooner. So we don’t recommend using them.
If you want to try to unclog your drain yourself, then try a more environmentally friendly product like baking soda or vinegar. If you want to learn more, see our blog ‘How to Unclog My Shower Drain’.
4. Why Does My Shower Take So Long to Heat Up?
This is a common problem and a common question, which could have many possible causes like:
- The type of hot water system
- The size of the hot water system
- The size of the water pipes
- The distance the hot water system is to the shower
- The pipe insulation
Correctly insulated hot water pipes not only increase the efficiency of your hot water system, but they can also eliminate the time lag it takes for hot water to reach your shower as it keeps the water in your pipes warmer for longer.
Hot water circulating pumps will assist when your hot water system is located a long way from your shower. Circulating pumps prevent water from sitting in your pipes by continually circulating hot water through the pipes.
Too small a hot water tank will be inefficient at heating cold water entering the system. This means it won’t recover in time causing cold or lukewarm water at your shower head.
